Don’t panic, we are here to assist you but, to be honest, it’s easier than it looks.
Starting April 2, 2025, travelers from Switzerland and the EU must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to enter the UK. Previously, a passport was sufficient, but this new requirement aims to enhance border control and streamline entry procedures.
What is the ETA?
The ETA is a digital authorization for short-term stays in the UK, for tourism or business. The system is designed to improve security and facilitate the entry of regular visitors.
How to Apply?
Applying for an ETA is quick and entirely online:
- Visit the official platform: Use the ETA UK app or the UK government website.
- Provide personal details: A valid passport is required.
- Pay the fee: Currently set at around £10.
- Receive approval: Most applications are processed within hours, but early application is advised.
When is it Required?
From April 2, 2025, all Swiss and EU/EEA citizens must present an ETA before boarding flights to the UK. Without it, entry will be denied, even with a valid passport.
Why the Change?
Post-Brexit, the UK has tightened border controls, implementing an authorization system similar to the U.S. ESTA. The ETA ensures better visitor tracking and a more efficient entry process.
What This Means for Travelers
For those used to traveling with just an ID, this adds a step, but it’s far easier than a visa. Once issued, the ETA remains valid for two years and multiple entries.
Travel Tips
Plan ahead! If traveling to the UK in 2025, apply for an ETA in advance. With a valid passport and approved ETA, you can enjoy a smooth journey.
